St. George’s Medical Practice is signed up to be a part of the Clinical Research Network East Midlands, which is part of the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR). NIHR is the research arm of the NHS.
The main purpose of NIHR is to fund, enable and deliver world-leading health and social care research, that improves people’s health and wellbeing. Research is needed for all common and rare conditions. It is only through research that we can help to develop better treatments, as well as improve diagnosis, prevention, care and quality of life for everyone.
Our involvement means we carry out various Research studies at the practice. All the studies are chosen because they affect patients who are registered at the surgery and live in our local area. Each study generally has criteria for involvement e.g., patients suffering from a particular disease etc and therefore if you fit in to one of these criteria you are likely to be contacted to ask if you wish to be involved. Participation in research is completely optional and does not affect the care you receive at the practice.
As travel to foreign countries is relatively simple these days, it is easy to forget or not realise what health risks we may be subjecting ourselves to. We recommend that if you are travelling to a foreign country, you check the Travel Health Pro Website (NaTHNaC – Home (travelhealthpro.org.uk). Look up the country to be visited and if you think you may need vaccinating, then make an appointment to see one of our practice nurses, preferably 2 months before departure. It is important to do this as early as possible to ensure we can offer you an appointment in time and have the appropriate vaccinations in stock.
During the appointment the nurse will assess and advise you on what you will need for the destination you are travelling to. They will also be able to give any of the necessary vaccinations that are available on the NHS. Please note that certain immunisations and anti-malarial prophylaxis are NOT available on the NHS. Our nurses will do their best to guide you as to where to seek help if you require private input. We no longer provide prescriptions for malaria tablets. Adults can attend a pharmacy and children must attend a private travel clinic to obtain these.
The following vaccinations are provided free of charge:
- Hepatitis A
- Typhoid
- Combined hepatitis A and typhoid
- Tetanus, diphtheria and polio given as a combined vaccine
- Cholera
- Combined measles, mumps and rubella (MMR)

The doctors are entitled to decide what services to provide that fall outside the NHS contractual obligations. Non-NHS services that the doctors choose to offer may have a charge. These services include insurance forms, holiday cancellation forms, fit to fly letters, HGV health checks, local council letters and many others. Our fees are advertised in the reception area.
All patients diagnosed with eligible chronic diseases, such as asthma, COPD, diabetes etc are recalled each year for a review. We will generally invite patients in their birth month and if you suffer from multiple conditions we will try where possible to cover them within the same review. Invitations will usually be sent out via text, but we do also send letters if text is not available.
These are important reviews aimed at supporting you by providing education, encouraging shared decision making and giving you the confidence to manage your health. Please respond when you receive your invitation to book your review.
For some diagnosis, such as diabetes, if you do not attend your review it may impact on our ability to prescribe some medications for you. We hope that you will attend, however, if you do not wish to have your review when invited please contact the surgery to let us know.
